In 2011 Keegan Duncker made the decision to be part of our first group of Pathway of Excellence Apprenticeships students. Keegan has an interest in mechanics and over the past year has completed work experience at Cummins Diesel, Volvo Trucks, Future Auto Rocklea and Jonker Plant Hire and Engineering. Just recently his hard work and dedication during his work experience at Jonker earned him an Apprenticeship!

As part of his Diesel Fitting Apprenticeship, Keegan will have the opportunity to work on large earthmoving equipment such as graders, rollers, dump trucks and excavators. Keegan is already working towards obtaining licences to drive forklifts, EWPs (cherry pickers) and cranes. Keegan is most looking forward to servicing large engines and would love one day to work in the front line of the mining industry.

Finding his career has been a journey for Keegan and he has learnt a few lessons along the way. Keegan has learnt that following your dream takes perseverance, hard work and a belief in yourself. He would also like to acknowledge the vital role Brisbane Christian College and Jonker Plant Hire and Engineering have played in providing support, encouragement, skills and a belief in him.

This year our Pathway of Excellence Apprenticeships program has grown from strength to strength. Our students have been in the workplace gaining practical experience in various occupations such as Diesel Fitting, Carpentry and Child Care. We have had very positive feedback from our students’ employers regarding the four week rotation (four weeks in the College learning core subjects followed by four weeks in the workplace). Our students are becoming increasingly comptent in their roles – they are able to build productive working relationships with their colleagues and take part in larger projects. These benefits are a result of an uninterrupted four week working block.

Our students have worked hard to secure their placements; writing resumes, contacting prospective employers and preparing for interview and we have celebrated with our students as they secured their placements.
Our students have much to report on their experiences in the workplace and have shared a glimpse into what they have been up to.

Hayley Mackay – Crestmead Early Education Centre
Trainee

As a school based trainee my job is to lend a helping hand to staff. I also enjoy the interaction of helping children in their activities and being a part of their lives. I have learnt so many new things about the kids I take care of and the diverese backgrounds they are from.

Liam Gannon – Fitnance
Trainee

I have many daily duties that form part of my work placement at Fitnance, a specialist in fitness education courses. My day involves getting fit through my own personal training, studying, cleaning and helping out to train clients. On my last working block I challenged one of the gym records and got my name onto the hall of fame for the ‘hang’ challenge – pulling myself up to the bar until chin height and holding myself for over two minutes.

Brock Hodgson – Mackays Furniture Transport
Apprentice

I worked as Furniture Transporter and a Truck Mechanic during my working block. I gained a lot of hands on experience and helped fix the inside walls of a truck trailer and load furniture onto trucks transporting goods Harvey Norman stores. I learnt how to lift heavy items, starting with single matresses and then moving to 60kg king mattresses, I used a technique that I learnt for lifting heavy objects. Overall the experience was fun and I would definitely work there again.

Keegan Duncker – Jonker Plant Hire
Work Experience

I worked at Jonker Plant Hire over four weeks as part of my work experience. I had the opportunity to repair Rammax trench rollers and compactors. I changed the hydraulic oil on the Rammax’s and repaired various parts on other machines. When working on compactors I had the chance to pull apart the blade and remove the engine and radiator.

I also helped repair the paint shed and clean up the complex to make it look much better. I enjoyed my time there and I’m looking forward to going back.

Natashah Shaw – Brig-O-Doon Aged Care
Apprentice

During the time that I was at Brig-O-Doon Aged Care I learnt the basic skills required of an Administration Assistant and a Diversional Therapist. I was also one of the main Cooks in the kitchen, which was so much fun. In my last week I helped out as the Manager’s Assistant. I am looking forward to going back to Brig-O-Doon as a volunteer for my next work placement.

Richelle Thompson – Brisbane Christian College
Work Experience

Over the last two weeks I have been helping in the Year 1/2 class. I have really enjoyed working with the kids because I love being able to help them when they are struggling with their school work. I enjoy teaching them skills for their future.

Joshua Legg – Future Auto
Work Experience

During my work experience I helped the Mechanics with whatever they needed. I also changed oil filters, stripped tyres, and repaired punctured tyres with tyre plugs.

Each morning I arrived at work at 7.30am. The first thing I would do is empty the bins and sweep the floor. After I cleaned up I would lend a helping hand to the Mechanics; emptying the oil, changing the oil filter and rotating and balancing the back wheels. While doing this I felt that I should pursue my trade in some sort of mechanics whether it be Heavy Diesel or Car Mechanics.

Mitchell Carter – GQ Industries
Work Experience

During my work experience I had the opportunity to dig trenches for a garage slab and around a building for pipework. After proving myself through all the hard work the fun began. I got to assist in marking out a slab for wall frames and placing beams of timber for the next floor level. I put scaffolding together – there are many different parts for many different situations. I enjoyed the experience and look forward to continuing next term.

Jason Caudery – Engineering Welding Services
Work Experience

I was able to learn many skills during my work experience. These skills involved tacking (welding), grinding, marking holes, melting steel and drilling holes. After I had furnished my basic skills I was given an opportunity to assist in making a hand rail and help in constructing a chimney.
